The Liftlock at Kirkfield is quite remarkable. It is the second highest liftlock in the world and one of many locks along the Trent-Severn Waterway that links Lake Ontario with Lake Huron. In season boaters take several days on this passage as it takes them through the beautiful Kawartha Lakes. If you come by boat, we will pick you up at any of the nearby marinas or locks. We welcome you for a night of relaxed land-side comfort at the Mackenzie Inn or just for dinner at our Gatehouse Restaurant and a stroll of our grounds. If you travel to Kirkfield by car you can easily drive to the liftlock in a few minutes.
In the area just north of Kirkfield is the Carden Plain, a renowned alvar. Hundreds of bird species inhabit this varied ecosystem, providing lots of challenge to 'birders' and simple pleasure to the uninitiated. Recognizing the significance of this unique site, the Nature Conservancy of Canada recently purchased a 3000 acre ranch for preservation.
This is a land of lakes and rivers, quiet streams and birdsong. The Kawartha Lakes have water for everyone with easy public access. Whether you choice is relaxing on a nearby beach, boating on the Trent-Severn, quiet fishing in a secluded cove or the adventure of discovering a new streams and quiet sights, you can find it in the Kawartha Lakes.
